The Michiana Post is an independent news organization committed to fact-based reporting on the issues that shape life in the greater Michiana region.
Our mission is to provide clear, accurate journalism that helps residents understand how their government functions, how public resources are managed, and how decisions made by those in power affect the community as a whole.
We cover local government, public policy, business, education, culture, and sports with an emphasis on accountability, transparency, and fairness. We believe an informed public is essential to a healthy democracy, and that journalism plays a critical role in preserving public trust.
Why The Michiana Post Was Created
In 2025, I submitted a formal complaint to the St. Joseph County Council regarding the potential misuse of public funds related to PERF benefits paid to a former county official. The complaint was detailed, supported by public records, and requested review through established oversight channels.
Rather than receiving a substantive public response, the complaint itself became the subject of public commentary.
In an official newsletter, a sitting councilmember questioned the legitimacy of the complaint and the identity of the person who filed it, using language that framed the inquiry as conspiratorial and suggested it should not be taken seriously. No public findings were issued at the time regarding the substance of the complaint.
Subsequently, the matter was referred to the Indiana Public Retirement System for review, the same process requested in the original filing, confirming that the concern warranted formal consideration.
That referral occurred without public explanation. The personal commentary, however, was public.
When I sought clarification from local officials and from the region’s primary newspaper, the response was largely silence.
The experience revealed a gap that should concern any resident: that legitimate questions about public governance can be deflected through personal attacks, and that those attacks may go unexamined.
